Tsukiji Fish Market is located near Tsikiji Shijo Station on the Oedo Line subway, and just above the route Hibiya Line Tsukiji Station. The market complex is divided into two, namely “inner market” (“jonai Shijo”) and “outside markets” (“jogai Shijo”). Inner market is the place where the fish auction takes place. There are about 900 licensed traders, who opened a small kiosk. While the outside market is a combination of market traders who sell kitchen tools, restaurant stuff, grocery, and sushi restaurants.
Tsukiji Fish Inner Market do not operate until the afternoon, while outside markets are generally open till evening. Tsukiji Fish Market is open everyday except Sundays and national holidays, the activity begins at 3 am when the seafood begins to be derived from ships, trucks, and airplanes from the sea around the world.
The most impressive attraction is the moment when frozen tunas are being moved to later auctioned. The auctioneer, known as “Oroshi gyousha” in Japanese, then estimate the price of tuna and prepared to make an offer. While the buyers – who must first hold a license before allowed participate in the auction – also check out the fish before they are going to bargain and buy at what price. The auctions usually start at 5:20 o’clock in the morning. Only the holders of auction license are allowed to make a bid. They consist of middle-class merchants (“nakaoroshi gyousha”) who has a shop in the market and agents restaurants, food companies, and retailers.
Activities auction ends at 7 am, after which the fish that successfully negotiated then loaded onto trucks or shipped to another location. There also are simply transferred to the three-wheeled motor vehicles to stores around the Tsukiji Market.
