Inle Lake, considered as the second largest lake in Myanmar is located in Sand Hills. Although this freshwater lake is not so large (only 116 km2), there are a number of endemic species that only can be found here – about nine species of fish and more than twenty species of nails.
The best time to visit Inle Lake is between September and October. In this period of time, you can watch several annual festival like Hpaung Daw U festival and Thadingyut lights festival. In Hpaung Daw U festival, u can see the famous traditional boat racing with dozens of leg-rowers in each boat wearing Shan dress.
Several attractions you can do in Inle Lake are such as, boat trip, bike riding and hiking. Boat trip is a must do, although bike riding around the village is also fun activity. A tip for you before taking the boat trip is try to find a group to go with so you can share the cost of the boat. If you prefer hiking, remember to find the Than The, a very recommended local guides who know the entire villages very well. But bear in mind that the hikes can be very exhausting since you have to walk about 20km, so ask the guide to shorten the trip if you think it’s too hard for you.
Inle Lake is becoming one of the major tourist attraction in Myanmar/Burma. You can easily find many privately owned hotels – from the small ones for limited budget travelers until the luxurious hotels. If you someday manage to visit this Inle Lake, don’t forget to try the unique Inle cuisine. You have to taste the Htamin jin, it’s a local Inle cuisine made of rice, tomato and potato.
The nearest airport is Heho, about 35km away from Inle Lake – about 1 hour taxi ride. This airport serves domestic flights to Yangon and Mandalay. Teh other options which is cheaper is by buses. You can take the buses from Yangon or Madalay.
