Togean Islands (also known as Togian) which is located in Central Sulawesi province of Indonesia are probably not so well known yet (at least for now!). The Togean (or Togian) Islands are an archipelago which is consist of 56 islands and islets, 27 villages and 3 main ethnic groups. This archipelago is precisely located in the Gulf of Tomini which is also the border line of Central-Sulawesi and North-Sulawesi. The three largest islands you will find here are Togian, Batudaka, and Talatakoh. Beside these three islands, there are many other small islands, but most of them are still covered by thick forest.
One aspect that makes this island famous is its marine life and the white sand beaches. Snorkling and diving are sereval activities to started with when you reach Togean Island. The dark green of the islands and the clear water is a perfect combination and many travelers has attracted to this island during the last several years. Although the Togean island is not easy to reach, and the facilities offered there are basic, many international travelers fall in love with the Togean Island, and also the way of life there.
Most visitors do nothing but lazing on many beautiful beaches. The time seems like walk slower than usual, that’s why many travelers stay longer than expected. However, The Togean Islands offer the unique opportunity for both divers and snorkelers to explore all 3 types of coral reef: barrier, fringe, and atoll. Togean islands is the only place in Indonesia that have this three major reefs combination. There is also a wide selection of diving spots you can choose, from easy ones to the hardest one, perfect for amateurs and professional.
One of the quickest and easiest ways to get to the Togean Islands is get a direct flight from Manado to Luwuk and then continue by six hours driving to Ampana. To reach Ampana, you can rent a private car or bus at Tana Toraja, and have a rest one night in Pendolo or Tentena. The other way is from Gorontalo, but it is not recommended.
