Japan – Weather and Best Time to Visit

Japan is one of the country in the world that can be visited through out the whole year. However, the weather pattern is differ a lot between the regions due to the country’s large north-south extension.

Spring (March-May)

Many events related to the interest held throughout the country. For example Ume Matsuri (PlumBlossom Festival) and Cherry Blossom Viewing. School spring break in Japan usually starts mid-March and continues until school starts in the first week of April. Domestic travel activity will be a little busy during the second half of March due to this spring school holidays.

While in April,  Cherry Blossoms are in full bloom in most parts of Japan and the weather is pleasantly mild. Golden Week occurs from late April to first week of May. All travel related business like transportation, accommodations, and tourist attraction  are very busy during this time.

Summer (June-August)

The rainy season in Japan usually starts in early May in Okinawa. But in other areas, it runs from early of June until about mid of July. Although July and August can be a little hot and humid in most parts of Japan, summer is the busiest season with many events are held during this period. 

Obon in mid August is the peak summer travel season. Many people enjoy their holidays during this time and visit their hometowns.

Autumn (September-November)

Unfortunately, typhoons usually hit the coasts of Okinawa, Kyushu and Shikoku. Most parts of Japan also face strong wind and heavy rain, but it only last for two days. But after that, a perfectly clear weather follows the typhoons. October is a really pleasant month for traveling in Japan. The weather remains warm, but is not too hot and humid anymore. 

Trees begin turning colors in the northern regions and higher elevations. Beautiful leaves turn red, yellow, and orange. Autumn in Japan begins in October and extendsthrough early December. Many fall festivals held throughout the country to give thanks for the harvest.

Winter (December-February)

Colorful holiday illumination can be seen from November throughout the country. Christmas is not a national holiday in Japan, but this event is celebrated in Japanese style.

New Year holiday is important for Japanese. This is the busiest travel season in the winter. Transportation is very busy during the last week of December until the first week of January.
