The Kiribati Islands covers the largest expanse of water in the Pacific, straddling the equator. However, it remains one of the most traditional in the pacific, with subsistence farming and fishing, traditional dance and handicraft weaving and long days of idle gatherings in the village hall. The widely scattered Kiribati Islands which is located in the Pacific Ocean along the edges of the Equator, includes the Gilbert, Phoenix and Line island groups. Most of these islands are uninhabited.
The atolls and islands of the Gilbert Islands which consists of 21 atolls/islands are arranged in an approximate north-to-south line. The atoll or islands in Gilbert Islands are Makin, Butaritari, Marakei, Abaiang, Tarawa, Maiana, Abemama, Kuria, Aranuka, Nonouti, Tabiteuea, Beru, Nikunau, Onotoa, Tamana, and Arorae.
The Phoenix Islands are a group of eight atolls and two submerged coral reefs, lying in the central Pacific Ocean east of the Gilbert Islands and west of the Line Islands. The islands are Kanton, Endenbury, Birnie, McKean, Rawaki, Manra, Orona and Nikumaroro.
The Line Islands, Teraina Islands or Equatorial Islands, is a chain of eleven atolls and low coral islands in the central Pacific Ocean, south of the Hawaiian Islands, that stretches for 2,350 km in a northwest-southeast direction, making it one of the longest islands chains of the world. The Islands are Kingman Reef, Palmyra Atoll, Teraina, Tabuaeran, Kiritimati, Jarvis, Malden, Filippo Reef, Starbuck, Caroline, Vostok, and Flin.
There is one raised coral island apart from above three Kiribati islands group. This island is called Banaba Island.
